The Peranakans or Peranakan Chinese is used interchangeably with Straits Chinese or Straits-born Chinese. Peranakan cuisine comes from Chinese migrants who settled in Malacca, Singapore, Indonesia and Penang and married with local Malays. Peranakan cuisine is a combination of Chinese ingredients with various spices and cooking methods used by the Malay or Indonesian community such as kaffir leaves, coconut milk, galangal, tamarind juice, chillies, lemongrass, cincalok, belachan and pandan leaves. Singaporeans have adopted Nyonya cuisine like beef rendang, assam fish, achar, otak-otak, chap chye and many more.
I had been craving for Nyonya cuisine. Nevertheless, baby friendly and stroller friendly restaurant is a must. An authentic beautifully decorated peranakan restaurant would be a bonus.
The Peranakan Restaurant In Claymore Connect Shopping Mall |
The Peranakan Restaurant is a lovely mini museum featuring Peranakan artefacts, history and development of Singapore as well. It is a mix between a restaurant and shop store for Peranakan items. Most importantly, the service is good and environment is pleasant for babies. You may find this restaurant on second floor of Claymore Connect, a contemporary, modern style shopping mall. The mall offers lifestyle shops and services plus restaurants and Cold Storage. Last but not least, there are nursery rooms in the mall!

Ayam Buah Keluak (4 Pieces Of Chicken And 4 Nuts) |
Ayam bush keluak is chicken braised in a blended spice paste with buah keluak, which is the seed of the repaying tree. The tree is native to Malaysia and Indonesia. This dish uses classic Chinese ingredients like garlic and ginger but the rempah used are decidedly malay: candlenuts, tamarind, lemon grass and belachan. We merrily cooed out the flesh of the buah keluak with small spoons.

Chap Chye. A True Peranakan Dish. Cabbage And Vegetable Stew |
Surprisingly, this restaurant caters to vegetarians. Nowadays, many parents encourage their kids to eat more vegetables and soy products. The menu includes assam mock fishcakes, mock pork and mock mutton (made of mushroom, rice, soy and other vegetables).
Although walk-ins are welcome, it is advisable to make reservations especially if you have a big family with kids or babies with strollers.
