Most Romantic French Dinner at Chamonix Mont Blanc, France
La Telecabine
Mont Blanc is European highest summit. Chamonix is a resort village, located in the French Alps on the frontier of France, Italy and Switzerland. We reached Chamonix Mont Blanc train station in the afternoon by taking a comfortable express train. Mont Blanc Express is a scenic Alpine mountain train route that runs by a French company. From Chamonix Mont Blanc train station, we walked to a hotel that we had booked. We were very excited as this was our first time travelling to Chamonix town, Mont Blanc and Mer de Glace. We spent one night in Chamonix town, so we had more time to explore the surroundings on top of going to the Alps in the following day.
After checked in our hotel room, we unpacked our luggage and got ready before we went to Mer de Glace. My next blog will include my itineraries and exciting trip in Mont Blanc and Mer de Glace. From this post, I'll focus on our date night in Chamonix. I didn't plan what to eat. We walked around and looked for a restaurant that appeared nice and quiet.
La Telecabine caught my attention as there was a cable car on the rooftop. This restaurant was less than 15 minutes walk from our hotel. There were many red roses displayed along the walkway. Looking from outside, the restaurant was sizeable and it was half full. Without second thought, we went in as the sky was cloudy and we were quite hungry.
Selfie in the restaurant |
I liked the color combination of red glass, red candle in a transparent container and a clean white table. All these evoked a romantic mood. They served a lot of warm bread in a basket; crispy outside and fluffy inside. It took 10-15 minutes of waiting time for starters.
Expected damage for a 3-course meal was 28 euro only unlike fine dining in my country. The Swiss and French Alps in winter created a beautiful and charming atmosphere that made an unforgettable experience. They also provided a jar of unlimited olive oil for bread dipping. However, all restaurants that I had visited in Europe charged 10 euro for a glass of water though tap water was drinkable. Requesting tap water is bad etiquette. They named it as sparkling water. In Malaysia and Singapore, warm or iced water is free or charged for 20 cents per glass. In some Asian countries, tea or water is complimentary.
Spice Rabbit terrine with Piquillos coulis |
Our starter was two sliced of rabbit meat and ample amount of leafy green. It was the first time we ate rabbit. The taste was decent. The red sauce next to sliced rabbit meat was not tomato or chilli sauce. It was piquillo sauce, which had mild paprika flavour.
Salade Savoyarde with sliced local sausage, poached Egg and Tomme Cheese shavings and Thyme Croutons |
One more starter was salad with French sausage, local cheese, poached egg and four shaved of cheeses. The whole plate of French salad was presentable and attractive. Salad was fresh and crunchy. Local sausage was slight cheesy and it had the taste of cured meat. Tomme cheese was very cheesy. Tomme cheese is a type of cheese made from goat's and cow's milk in Switzerland and French Alps. It is good quality cheese or lower fat cheese.
Fish of the day |
Main course was the best part we had been waiting for. The panfried fish with colourful non-meat ingredients was enticing. The fish and quinoa was absolutely delicious. Fish was not fishy at all and its skin was quite crispy. We ate and drank slowly in order to taste its full flavour and enjoy it with great ambience in French town.
Tender Roasted Free Range Poultry, Crayfish bisque and Tagliatelle pasta |
Tagliatelle pasta was delectable. This long, ribbon-style pasta coated well with thick crayfish creamy soup. The taste of bisque was similar to lobster soup. They used fresh crayfish and free range chicken, which was tender and flavourful. Eating free range chicken is always better than domestic one. It's tastier and leads healthier lives.
Fresh Farmer's Cheese with cream |
French people eat a lot of cheese. Farmer's cheese is mild white cheese with moist and crumbly texture. It has countless possibilities; sprinkle fresh herbs on top of the cheese, crumbled on salad or eat with bread.
Our dessert was a big piece of fresh farm cheese. Although there were four different dessert selections, we wanted to try the taste of farmer's cheese. It was a good try but I preferred something sweet to a cheese.
Big macaroon, blueberries and chocolate ganache |
I ordered one of the most popular dessert in the world. The French-style macaron was the first biggest macaron we'd tasted, so we savoured every mouthful of macaron. The big macaron was 3 times the size of a table spoon. Big macaron shells were filled with rich chocolate ganache. The strawberry macaron was as tasty as it looked. It was mildly moist, sweet and easily melt in our mouth.
Big macaroon, blueberries and chocolate ganache |
The dessert was mouth-watering. Blueberries ganache was contained in a cup. Blueberries and chocolate ganache were soft and luscious. It melt slowly in my mouth and it had rich chocolate flavour. An average macaron costs at least $2.50. The big macaron's size was twice the diameter of an average macaron. Surprisingly, a 3-course meal including big macaron was 25 euro only.

Cafe La Terrasse, Chamonix |
Brasserie de L'M, Chamonix |
Chamonix valley is a beautiful resort. After eating dinner, we took a stroll in Chamonix at the base of Mont Blanc. We explored the resort village, which was surrounded by French Alps. Most retail shops were close except restaurants remained open. We walked past several eateries such as Brasserie de L'M and Cafe La Terrace. We saw incredible views as the town was nestled in an idyllic environment at the foot of Mont Blanc. Its colourful history and architectural heritage was a whole new experience for me.
