Most Affordable Western Restaurant That Serves Tasty Food in Singapore
Platypus Cantina
Platypus restaurants are definitely not baby-friendly and stroller friendly as chairs and tables are close to each other. There are not sufficient space for baby strollers and from my experiences, babies might feel frightened sitting too close to strangers. Nevertheless, Platypus Cantina is hidden gem for Mexican cuisine in Singapore because there are not many budget and good Mexican food available islandwide.
My husband and I had a dinner date in Bugis Junction. We walked around looking for a good restaurant and decided to try Platypus as the ambience looked fine. Environment appeared neat and tidy. Service was satisfying, waitress was quite friendly and professional. I ordered a bowl of pumpkin soup. It was super creamy (contributed by the pumpkin), sweet and delicious. It had silky and smooth texture. This soup is good for kids who don't like to eat vegetables.
There are variety of Mexican dishes but they also serve standard Western food such as pasta, fried chicken, roast chicken, ribeye and pork steak, fish and chips. Food portion is moderate. I am a big fan of roast chicken. The roast chicken was quite big and garnished with garlic and rosemary. It was very delicious. Side dishes were excellent. Green vegetables, tomato and lemon were fresh. Potato fries were crispy outside, soft and juicy inside.
Dinner is not complete without desserts. Warm chocolate cake and one scoop of vanilla ice cream is a classic combination. Although this dessert was nothing special, it's my all-time favourite food. Chocolate went well with vanilla ice cream when I mixed them up. I was addicted with one bite of this decadent, rich and moist chocolate cake. It was savoury and truly pampered me. The sweetness was just right, neither too sweet nor bland.
For vegetarians, there are many food options from pasta, burgers, tacos, burrito, snacks and soup. Mostly were made of tempeh, avocados, mushrooms, corns, potatoes, quinoa, beans and nuts. Please check the vegan menu at Vegetarian Food Menu.
Platypus Cantina is currently only open for Delivery & Takeout due to Singapore's COVID-19 social distancing measures. They are offering periodic discounts on their website at Platypus On Sale, 3rd party delivery vendors and they have a special Circuit Breaker menu for take-away orders.
