Mouth-Watering Grilled Sausage and Pock Knuckle In A German Restaurant, Singapore

Brotzeit

Germans traditionally enjoy eating Bratwurst (Grilled Sausage), Schweinshaxe (Pork Knuckle), Sauerbraten (roast beef stew), Sauerkraut (Fermented Cabbage) and Spätzle (Egg Noodles). Their main cooked meal is usually quite heavy and there will be meat in every meal.

Brotzeit is a German Bier Bar and Restaurant, serving delicious, authentic German food and good quality beer. I do not drink alcoholic beverages but I believe their beers should be as great as their food. Brotzeit is a casual dining restaurant in a contemporary setting. There are four outlets in Singapore. They also opened 13 overseas franchise branches in Malaysia (2), Vietnam, Hong Kong (2), China (2), Philippines (3) and Australia (3).

Nürnberger (Grilled Pork Sausages)

Nürnberger ($20) is five grilled pork sausages with Käsespätzle (cheese Spätzle) and Sauerkraut (braised German white cabbage). Nürnberger is made from coarsely ground pork, it is seasoned with marjoram, salt, pepper, ginger, cardamom and lemon powder and is one of the most popular sausages in Germany. Sauerkraut is a fermented food made from cabbage. It is one of the ways to preserve some vitamins for long trips or winter back in the days. The fermented cabbage has distinctive sour flavor, both of which result from the lactic acid formed when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage leaves. You either love it or hate it. It is extremel sour. It pairs with sausages and Spätzle. Nürnberger is delectable and perfectly grilled. Spatzle is cheesy eggs and it tastes quite bland. It's supposed to eat with grilled sausage and Sauerkraut.

Thüringer Rostbratwurst (Thüringer Pork Sausage)

Dining at Brotzeit was unique, credible and memorable. Staffs were warm, friendly and welcoming. A chef came to us and asked for feedback about the food taste. We were happy with the food and environment. Food was served quickly. Thüringer Rostbratwurst ($19) is German pork and veal sausage from Thuringia with rich tradition. Thüringer means a mildly seasoned fresh or smoked sausage. The sausage was very long that curled beautifully like a circular coil. It was slightly spicy and taste was milder than pork sausages. Hot spätzle mixed with cheese and were decorated with fried onions. Accompanying side dish was Sauerkraut (braised German white cabbage). Dips were succulent and a must with the sausage.

Schweinshaxn (Oven-roasted Pork Knuckle)

We had one of the best pork knuckle in Singapore. Schweinshaxe ($39) was a large pork knuckle roasted, crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. It was three times the size of my fist. The pork knuckle was so deep fried that we found very little fats inside. It was quite pricey but we had 1-for-1 promotion for sausages for Singtel customers.

Eating German Food For Al-Fresco Lunch

Brotzeit at Westgate is conveniently within walking distance from Jurong East MRT and bus interchange. Shopping malls such as JEM, JCube and IMM are nearby. This outlet features a large semi al-fresco area and air-conditioned area. At the al-fresco area, the restaurant is sheltered with big fans. Nevertheless, it can be warm because Singapore is sunny and humid. It is baby-friendly and stroller-friendly when it is not too crowded. Try to avoid peak hours or come early for lunch or dinner. Brotzeit at Raffles City Shopping Centre is located centrally in the city, easily accessible by buses, MRT and car. It is an all-open shop front and it can be quite hot in the afternoon and even at night. Other outlets have air-conditioned area with classic communal dining setting. Overall, I was satisfied with the food, ambience and service. Brotzeit served tasty German-style dishes. Their food menu is available at this link.
