Good View, Best Pan-Fried and Soup Dumplings In Shanghai!

Taikang Dumpling

Nanjing Road is a famous shopping area in Shanghai, offering all kinds of shops and restaurants. In this area, you will find business people, tourists, and lot of touts trying to sell all kinds of services, from massages to fake watches. Even if you're not interested in shopping, it's worth checking out this always-bustling area to get an idea of how many people there are in Shanghai.

We visited Taikang Dumpling Restaurant because it was highly recommended by Tripadvisor and near my hotel. We only had 5 days of vacation in Shanghai. The restaurant is on the second floor accessed by a staircase at the back of a food hall. We reached around 6pm, the restaurant was empty and slowly filled up until half of the restaurant were full. Most of the diners were locals who spoke Shanghainese and Chinese accent. The restaurant was perfect for casual lunch and dinner.

The food was good. We tried multiple types of dumplings. Service was prompt and efficient. Credit cards like Visa, MasterCard and American Express are not accepted to make payment. You need to pay in cash or else you have Shanghai Bank credit card.

Pan-fried Bun Stuffed With Crab Meat And Pork

We didn't wait that long after making food orders. They served our food one by one quickly. My favourite dish was pan-fired stuffed with crab meat and pork, garnished with chopped spring onions. The filling was so savoury, juicy and slight soupy.  The skin was smooth and fragrant. Base of the bun was pan-fried and very crispy with burnt taste. One bite and I was hooked! Taste was amazing when I chew the bun in combination of the crispy, burnt skin base, seasoned crab meat and pork and spring onions.

Pork Wonton

I tried their pork wonton soup because it was highly recommended in the food menu.st I don't suggest you to order their pork wonton as the taste of wonton and soup was bland. Wonton mee that I had in Singapore and Malaysia were better than here. Nevertheless, we ate all pork wonton without leftovers.

Steamed Bun Stuffed With Juicy Crab Roe

I liked their Xiao Long Bao. When the dumplings came, they were hot enough to burn. Eight pieces of dumplings were wrapped beautifully and all Bao were consistent in shape and size. Taste was quite similar with Jia Jia's dumplings. However, the skin on top of the Bao was thicker than Jia Jia's one. I used a spoon and scooped one dumpling. Then I took a tiny bite at the side of the skin and through that little hole, I slurped the soup. It was so deletable. They served good quality of meat, only lean meat, tender, no grizzle or fat.

Steamed Bun Stuffed With Juicy Crab Roe

The big steamed bun was mostly stuffed with crab roe soup. There were very little or no meat filled in the big dumpling. I poked the bao's skin with a pair of chopsticks. Then I used a spoon to drink the soup from the big bun. Somehow, small dumplings were more delicious than big dumpling partly because there were no meat stuffed in the big dumpling to enhance the taste.

Deep-fried Spare Rib

Deep-fried spare rib was too ordinary but we finished it. The pork cutlet was crispy and succulent. It was made of lean meat and boneless. Meat was thin, tender and dredged in breadcrumbs. We ate like carnivores. All dishes were made of meat without vegetables.

Taikang Dumpling Restaurant

Restaurant was bright, clean and tidy. Atmosphere was fantastic. We sat by the window and watched the busy street below. Nanjing Road is Shanghai's busiest shopping street lined with top-end shopping malls, old-brand shops, and traditional eateries. Food menu printed both in Chinese and English with clear pictures. It also featured signature items such as steamed and fried dumplings, soup dumplings, fried breaded pork cutlet, spring rolls and noodle soup. Waitresses spoke Chinese but they were polite and professional.
