Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is approximately 50 km away from The Bund, Shanghai. From Shanghai Downtown, we took Metro Line 17, get off at Zhujiajiao Station and walked about 15 minutes to Zhujiajiao. Due to lack of time, Zhujiajiao was the best and second nearest option to get a feel of water town in Shanghai. Qibao is the nearest but smaller than Zhujiajiao. Known as "Venice of Shanghai", there are many unique, traditional bridges and boat ride is available. However, Venice is huge and ambience is more elegant. 

Zhujiajiao is a village located in Qingpu District of Shanghai with more than 1,700 years of history. In the past centuries, Zhujiajiao was a trading area and waterways were used to transport goods with small boats and barges. This water town is well endowed with canals, 36 well preserved bridges, and ancient Chinese-style residences.

Lang Bridge (Veranda Bridge) or Huimin Bridge, is the only wooden bridge and the most featured span in Zhujiajiao Water Town. It has wooden bars on two sides and upturned eaves above, like a narrow corridor. If you’d like to take a boat cruise, you may purchase a ticket that only costs 120RMB.

Other than The Bund, water town is one of the top reasons to visit Shanghai. In water town, there are fascinating canals, bridges, and architecture. Zhujiajiao Water Town is one of several that our tourists prefer near Shanghai. in Qingpu District, one hour from central Shanghai. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is a nice destination in contrast to high-rise modern Shanghai, only an hour from downtown Shanghai. It's quite large at 1.3 km square with waterways, 36 ancient bridges, and traditional Chinese-style residences.

'Pearl Stream' is another elegant name for Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town, which is the best preserved town among all four ancient towns in Shanghai. There are unique bridges built across bubbling streams, small rivers are shaded by willow trees and houses with courtyards. Shanghainese have been living amidst the hustle and bustle of metropolitan city would like to take a break to enjoy the peace and tranquility in Zhujiajiao village. 


Zhujiajiao Water Town

In Zhujiajiao Water Town, there are ancient buildings along the street, which was built during Ming and Qing Dynasties. It attracts many domestic and foreign visitors. North Street is the best preserved ancient street in this suburb. The street is just one kilometer long and it is easy to cover the whole street. It is a simple pleasure to take a stroll on this ancient street while sightseeing the historic buildings, long-established stores, and old bridges as well as the many narrow lanes.

As you explore Old Town (Nanshi), you feel like you step back in time in the district of ancient Shanghai. Although rebuilt, the area still retains its “old China” atmosphere and charm. Nanshi is very crowded, touristy and loud, but you should include this place in your itinerary of Shanghai. There are many restaurants and food street, clothes, toys, high-end merchandise, and other inexpensive souvenirs. You have to roam the narrow side streets and experience the crowds of the bazaar, or visit one of the temples.
